A benefactor with the state at
heart
ADELAIDE builder Gordon Pickard deserves the highest public
praise for his role in providing lifesaving surgical equipment to the Royal
Adelaide Hospital.
Every dignified society must have benefactors.
Mr
Pickard, who has established a special foundation to provide donations to
worthwhile community causes, has set an outstanding example.
The donation of
the $3 million da Vinci robotic surgical system to the RAH is only the latest
gift to the state by the foundation.
Mr Pickard also provided the funding to
kick-start the Adelaide United soccer team last season, giving South Australia a
competitive team in the national competition.
South Australia has many
philanthropists, too numerous to recognise here, who have contributed to the
infrastructure of the state.
While the generosity of people like Mr Pickard
is to be applauded, it must not minimise the responsibility of the State
Government to provide necessary medical equipment and the finest medical care
for public hospitals.
If crucial equipment which will demonstrably save lives
is required, then the state should find the money, even if other projects and
services are sacrificed.
